Gove family papers, 1826, 1842, 1852-1911.

Correspondence and miscellaneous business papers chiefly document the everyday life of George and Maria Gove and several family members from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Letters between George and Maria from 1872 to 1908 pertain to George's work as a resident physician at various hotels and Maria's life on their farm in Whitefield, New Hampshire. Topics include George's patients and remedies; the locations that he practiced, including California and Chicago; operations of their farm and household in Whitefield; and trips to visit relatives in Wisconsin, Iowa, and New York. Letters from Anna Gove chiefly document her medical studies in Vienna, Austria, from 1896 to 1897, and her travels throughout Europe. Also included are several letters from her early years at the North Carolina State Normal and Industrial School in Greensboro and her travels in the United States. Letters written by Mary Clark and Ellen Clark Brace in the 1880s and 1890s describe their daily lives in Wisconsin and Chicago, respectively.

Anna Maria Gove (1867-1948) of Whitefield, New Hampshire, was the resident physician, professor of hygiene, and director of the Department of Health at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina from 1893 to her retirement in 1937.
